New Picture Every Day

Check back every day.

Matanuska Glacier, Alaska.

We were stranded with this view for a couple of days when one of the motors in the slide out stopped working. We were not happy to be stranded... but what a view. We were there long enough to watch the light change many times over.

At the time of year we were there it never really gets "dark" at night. So the sun hits the face of the white ice in strange ways as the sun "set". The clouds in the sky and the darkness in the background and the brightness of the white/bluish ice was pretty spectacular.

Cowboy Boot Birdhouses

Cowboy boots made into birdhouses... with license plates as roofs and horse shoes over the "door". This was a display put up by the former postmaster in Medora, North Dakota.

Totem Pole, Haines Alaska

I like the way this image turned out. The way it appears to rest in the clouds.

Totem poles intrigue me and I would like to have the opportunity to take many more pictures of them. But, like taking Amish pictures, I am not sure where the lines are drawn in taking pictures, because some of these objects are considered spiritual and I don't want to tred on someone's sensitivities. This particular pole was in a display area near the water so given its touristic location I thought it safe to take the picture.

Canadaian Wood Bison

Canadian Wood Bison.

This picture was taken by Pam (I'm pretty sure). When we saw bison no one got out of the vehicle and it seemed like they were always on her side, so she took most all of the bison pictures.

We were told that these were located by the government to this area. The government did not realize that the bison would find the grass along side the roadway easy to get to and apparently very tasty. So along a stretch of the Alaskan highway around Laird Springs is this herd of buffalo that wanders up and down the road.

When they decide to cross the road, they don't look both ways and wait for the car to pass. They just lumbar across the road. It is your job to watch out for them.

Eagle with Prize

Pam took this picture because the action was on her side of the vehicle. We were both very excited about this series of pictures. It was so much fun to see the eagle swoop down and "catch" this fish out of the river. It took us a while to realize that this "fish" is not whole. If you look closely it is a fish carcass. It is a common practice to clean and filet your catch throwing the carcass back in the river for the eagles.

There were two eagles nest near to where this picture was taken. We saw one very clearly and someone in town (Haines, AK) told us about another.

Remember we post about a picture a day, so come back and see what is here tomorrow!
